Man Arrested After Student Protest Turns Violent in Buda

BUDA, Texas - A student-led protest in Buda turned violent Monday, resulting in the arrest of a Kyle man accused of assaulting others during the demonstration, according to police.

The Buda Police Department said Chad Michael Watts, 45, was arrested and charged with two counts of assault causing bodily injury following an incident near the intersection of RM 967 and FM 1626 during a student walkout.

Investigators said the confrontation began as a verbal argument between Watts and a teenage girl on a sidewalk near the protest site. The dispute quickly escalated into a physical altercation involving multiple individuals.

Police reviewed witness statements and video evidence circulating online, including footage that appears to show Watts returning to his pickup truck after the confrontation. Based on the evidence, investigators determined Watts was the primary aggressor, authorities said. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges are possible.

Ruben Becerra condemned the incident, emphasizing that adults have a responsibility to show restraint, particularly when minors are involved.

“Violence or intimidation directed at a minor — particularly during a lawful, peaceful demonstration — has no place in a constitutional republic,” Becerra said, adding that he is in contact with law enforcement and the district attorney’s office.

Lee Urbanovsky also addressed the incident, describing it as emotionally charged and concerning for the community.

Police are asking anyone with additional video, photos, or information related to the incident to contact the Buda Police Department at 512-393-7896. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-324-8477.
