A surveillance operation took a dangerous turn when officers from the San Antonio Police Street Crimes Unit engaged in a shootout with a suspect on the 6800 block of Cross Spring in West San Antonio. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Michael Kirkland, was wanted on a warrant for Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant.
Police officers spotted Kirkland in his vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Instead of complying, Kirkland fled the scene, striking a marked patrol unit in the process. During the pursuit, Kirkland fired multiple rounds at the officers, hitting one in the arm. In response, two officers returned fire, but Kirkland managed to escape onto the main lanes of IH 10 E. Desperate to escape, Kirkland began shooting at passing motorists, attempting to hijack a vehicle.
In the ensuing confrontation, two officers exchanged gunfire with Kirkland, ultimately striking him. Despite immediate medical attention, Kirkland was pronounced dead at the scene.
The injured officer was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The San Antonio Police Department has released video footage of the incident, providing a firsthand account of the harrowing event.
