Justice After 5 Years: San Antonio Man Sentenced to 45 Years for Fatal Crash During Stolen Vehicle Escape

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A Bexar County judge has sentenced a man to 45 years in prison for the death of a woman killed during a crash involving a stolen vehicle.

Judge Ron Rangel of the 379th District Court sentenced 35-year-old Phillip Lopez this week for the murder of 53-year-old Olga De Anda.

Prosecutors said the incident occurred in August 2020 when Lopez stole a running vehicle that had been parked at a roadside vendor on the southeast side of San Antonio. While fleeing at a high rate of speed, Lopez ran a red light and crashed into De Anda’s vehicle, killing her.

In addition to the murder conviction, Lopez also faced charges of aggravated assault and failure to stop and render aid. Those charges were considered by the court and factored into the overall sentence.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Jessica Schulze and Alexis O’Connor of the Bexar County Criminal Trial Division. Victim Advocate Jacky Garcia and Investigator Eddie Rohmer assisted with the case.

“This sentencing demonstrates our resolve to protect the safety and dignity of our community from senseless crimes such as this,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said. “Nothing can bring Olga back, but we hope this sentence helps her loved ones begin to heal from this unimaginable loss.”
