Man Arrested After Starved Dogs Discovered in East Bexar County; Cockfighting Operation Also Suspected

Aundra Mathis

BEXAR COUNTY, TX - A call about a vehicle fire in Adkins led Bexar County deputies to uncover a disturbing case of animal cruelty and suspected cockfighting on New Year’s Day.

On January 1, 2026, deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of Kayroe Drive after reports of a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. While securing the scene, a deputy noticed a severely malnourished tan dog chained to a fence on the property.

Deputies made contact with Aundra Mathis, who was uncooperative and initially denied any involvement with the animals. As the investigation continued, deputies discovered three severely malnourished dogs and more than 60 chickens and roosters confined in cages without adequate food, water, or shelter.

Investigators gathered evidence showing Mathis had previously strangled a dog and had been involved in provoking roosters to fight. Deputies reviewed video evidence supporting those claims and noted multiple prior 311 complaints related to animal welfare at the property.

During a walkthrough, deputies found one deceased bird and another with injuries consistent with cockfighting. The property owner told investigators that Mathis had been working at the residence and identified him as the owner of the chickens and roosters, though the owner denied responsibility for the dogs.

Mathis denied living at the residence and denied owning the dogs, but admitted ownership of some of the poultry. Based on the totality of the evidence, deputies arrested Mathis on charges of cockfighting and three counts of animal cruelty involving non-livestock.

Bexar County Animal Control responded to the scene and took custody of all animals for safekeeping.
