On Wednesday, June 28, 2023, a family member reported to the Cibolo Police Department that James Doty, a 61-year-old longtime resident and civil servant of Cibolo, was attacked by an unknown person and robbed while walking to his vehicle in a parking lot in the 4400 blk of Green Valley Road in Cibolo, TX on June 15, 2023.
Detectives from the Cibolo Police Department Criminal Investigations Division have been actively investigating this incident as our top priority since it was reported.
On Thursday, June 15, 2023, at approximately 1:30 p.m., James Doty visited the Security Service Federal Credit Union in Schertz, TX to make a withdrawal from inside the bank. Based on bank video, an unidentified black female wearing a surgical mask appears to be watching Doty conduct his bank business and then proceeds to follow Doty out of the bank. The female gets into a gray Chevrolet Impala that waits and follows Doty’s vehicle out of the bank parking lot travelling in the same direction behind him. A short time later, at approximately 2:15 p.m., Doty stops at a business in the 4400 blk of Green Valley Road. The gray Chevrolet Impala that followed him from the bank is then seen circling the parking lot on surveillance video after Doty arrives and enters a business.
When Doty exits the business and while entering his vehicle, a newer model gray Chevrolet Trailblazer drives up and stops behind Doty’s vehicle. A black male wearing a blue hoodie and a surgical mask exits the passenger side of the suspect vehicle and approaches Doty from behind striking him to the ground.
A struggle on the ground is seen between the suspect and Doty before the suspect flees back to the Chevrolet Trailblazer with a white envelope in his hand containing the money that Doty had earlier withdrawn. After the suspect flees from the scene, Doty is able enter his vehicle and drive away from the scene. There were no calls to the police department to report the incident when it happened.
On Wednesday, June 21, 2023, Mr. Doty began to act strange and suffered a fall. On Thursday, June 22, 2023, Mr. Doty’s symptoms began to worsen, and he was transported to a San Antonio area hospital for treatment. While at the hospital, Doty fell into a coma and was placed on a ventilator. On Thursday, July 13, 2023, Detectives were notified that James Doty died on July 12, 2023 while in the hospital in San Antonio, TX.
“Mr. James Doty was a long-time civil servant and resident in the Cibolo community and our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Our detectives have made this case a top priority and are diligently working to identify the suspects responsible. When the suspects are identified we will work with the Guadalupe County Attorney’s Office and charge them with the appropriate crime to the highest extent of the law.” said Interim Police Chief John Wells. “Unfortunately, incidents of ‘bank jugging’ are on the rise across the country. We want to encourage everyone to always be aware of your surroundings, especially when withdrawing money from a banking institution. If you suspect you are being watched or being followed, do not stop anywhere. Immediately call 911 to have a police officer meet you at a safe, well-lit location or drive to the closest law enforcement agency as a safe location.”
Currently this is an active investigation and Cibolo Police Department Detectives are following up on all leads but the suspects in this incident have not yet been identified. The Cibolo Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the Chevrolet Trailblazer and the male suspect as well as the Chevrolet Impala and female suspect in the attached surveillance photos.
