The San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) and The Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio (HMMSA) are set to host the twelfth annual The Holocaust Learn & Remember series throughout January. Dedicated to commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, the series focuses on honoring and remembering the victims and survivors of the Holocaust.
This year's theme, "upstanders," highlights individuals who recognized injustices and took courageous actions to rectify them. From the bravery of Jan and Miep Gies, who sheltered Anne Frank and her family, to the heroism of the Bielski Partisans who assisted Jews in escaping ghettos in Poland, the series sheds light on ordinary citizens who resisted the hate propagated by the Nazis.
Throughout the month, the series will feature presentations by historians and Holocaust experts, delving into the stories and history of these remarkable individuals who stood up against wrongdoing and sought to do what was right.
In addition to programs presented by historians, a travelling exhibit will be on display at four locations throughout the month of January. Visit Igo Branch and McCreless Branch from January 3 –12 and Memorial Branch and Parman Branch January 14 – 31 to learn the stories of individuals recognized by Yad Vashem, World Holocaust Remembrance Center, as the Righteous Among the Nations. These individuals, regarded as “upstanders,” were non-Jews who took great risks to save Jews during the Holocaust.
