Arrest in Decomposed Pit Bull Case Reveals Alarming Animal Cruelty in Bexar County

In a disturbing incident this week, a foul odor at a local apartment complex led to the discovery of a deceased and "extremely decomposed" pit bull, as well as the rescue of a malnourished second dog. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar announced the arrest of 24-year-old Kamryn McKee, who claimed to have last seen the dogs on January 1, asserting they were healthy before leaving for a nail appointment.

Sheriff Salazar expressed doubt about McKee's account, stating, "That, to me, is a lie," citing the advanced decomposition and malnourishment of the second dog as evidence. He suggested that the neglect had been ongoing for some time.

The incident unfolded after a resident at a far-west-side apartment complex reported a foul smell to Bexar County Animal Control. Responding to the call in the 5000 block of Mansions Bluffs, authorities confirmed the odor. Upon entering the apartment with the assistance of maintenance staff, deputies made the grim discovery of the deceased pit bull and the malnourished dog.

Sheriff Salazar emphasized a "direct link" between animal cruelty and more severe crimes like domestic violence or human trafficking, underscoring the urgency of McKee's arrest. He stated, "Anybody that’s capable of just letting an animal be neglected to the point where they’re gonna die of starvation... that just tells me that’s a person with a cold, cold heart that could possibly do something along those lines to a human as well."

Kamryn McKee now faces charges of Cruelty-Non Livestock-Torture/Kill, a third-degree felony.
