Celebratory Gunfire Results in Injury at New Year's Celebration in South Texas

On Monday, January 1, 2024, at 12:09 AM, Hidalgo County Sheriff Deputies responded to a Gunshot Wound call in the 8600 block of El Cunado St., rural Mission, Texas.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 39-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim had been attending a New Year's celebration at the residence when he was struck by a stray bullet. Quick to respond, deputies administered medical aid until the victim could be transported to a local hospital.

Witnesses at the scene reported hearing celebratory gunfire just before the unfortunate incident occurred. Sheriff Investigators were called to the location to collect evidence and gather further details about the incident.

The injured man received treatment for his non-surgical injuries and was released from the hospital the following day. Authorities take this opportunity to remind the public about the dangers of celebratory gunfire. Bullets discharged into the air can return to the ground at lethal speeds, posing a significant risk to both people and property. Law enforcement urges the community to celebrate responsibly and refrain from engaging in gunfire during festivities.
