SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A 21-year-old man has been arrested after a newborn was hospitalized with multiple fractures that medical personnel determined were consistent with child abuse, according to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.
Bexar County deputies responded to a San Antonio-area hospital on Sunday, Aug. 23, after receiving information about a newborn who had been admitted with multiple injuries.
During the investigation, authorities learned that the child had suffered several fractures. Investigators said the injuries included both recent fractures and older injuries that were already healing, indicating the child had been injured at different times.
Deputies identified Aiden Jacob Rodriguez, 21, as a suspect in the investigation.
Rodriguez told investigators that he had been walking while holding the newborn when he tripped and fell.
According to authorities, Rodriguez said the child cried following the fall but acknowledged that he did not report the incident.
Medical personnel who evaluated the newborn told investigators that the child's injuries were not consistent with the fall Rodriguez described. Instead, authorities said medical personnel determined the injuries were consistent with child abuse.
Rodriguez was subsequently arrested and charged with Injury to a Child – Intentional, a second-degree felony under Texas law.
Authorities did not release additional information about the newborn's condition or identify the child's relationship to Rodriguez.
The investigation remains active, and the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said additional charges are being considered.
