In a significant operation, the Travis County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) Vice Unit achieved a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking. The investigation, initiated in August 2023, targeted Juan Jose Cardenas-Flores, suspected of orchestrating large-scale drug trafficking activities.
As the probe unfolded, the Vice Unit discovered a connection between Cardenas-Flores and a reported robbery being investigated by the Austin Police Department (APD). Collaborating with APD robbery detectives and the DEA Task Force, the Vice Unit obtained a state robbery warrant for Cardenas-Flores and a search warrant. Both warrants were executed on October 5, 2023.
The surveillance and subsequent arrest of Cardenas-Flores resulted in the seizure of approximately 15.5 kilograms of methamphetamine and various firearms. This substantial haul is the largest reported methamphetamine seizure by the TCSO Vice Unit in over two decades.
On December 19, 2023, a federal grand jury indicted Cardenas-Flores for violations of Title 21 USC Section 841, specifically for possession with the intent to manufacture, distribute, or dispense a controlled substance. Lab results revealed that the seized methamphetamine had an 87% purity level, and TCSO field tests also detected the presence of fentanyl.
