In the early hours of Friday, December 22, 2023, at 2:09 AM, a local deputy conducted a routine traffic stop near the intersection of East US Highway 290 and Rocky Hill School Drive. The stop was initiated due to the observation of a moving traffic violation, specifically speeding.
Upon approaching the vehicle, deputies detected the odor of alcoholic beverages emanating from within. The driver, identified as 19-year-old Kyle Chase Grunert of Fredericksburg, and his male passenger, a 15-year-old whose identity is protected due to age, were both contacted.
While speaking with Grunert outside the vehicle, deputies continued to notice the smell of alcohol, despite his denial of consuming any alcoholic beverages. Further investigation revealed signs indicating that Grunert was under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, THC vapes were discovered inside the vehicle during the search.
As a result, Kyle Chase Grunert was arrested on charges of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and Possession of a Controlled Substance in Penalty Group 2, specifically a quantity greater than or equal to 1 gram but less than 4 grams. The 15-year-old male passenger was released into the custody of a parent.
Grunert's bond was set at $16,500, and he was able to secure his release from jail on the same day of his arrest, December 22, 2023.
