In the early hours of Sunday, December 17, 2023, at approximately 12:51 AM, a routine traffic stop in the Whataburger parking lot at 1301 East Main Street led to the arrest of 26-year-old Zachary Aaron Caleb Kendrick of Fredericksburg. The Gillespie County Sheriff deputy initiated the stop after observing an expired registration violation (09/23).
Upon making contact with Kendrick, the deputy detected signs of alcohol impairment. As the deputy attempted to have Kendrick exit the vehicle, the driver revealed that he was carrying a handgun. Despite the deputy's request to remove the weapon and exit the vehicle, Kendrick declined, prompting the deputy to call for additional assistance.
Upon the arrival of assisting deputies, Kendrick distanced himself from the firearm and the vehicle. Subsequent investigation determined that Kendrick was indeed intoxicated, leading to his arrest for the offense of Driving While Intoxicated. Once at the jail, Kendrick, during the process of providing a breath sample, disclosed the possession of a vape pen containing THC. Consequently, Kendrick faced an additional charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance in Penalty Group 2 < 1 gram.
