Fredericksburg Police Chief Brian Vorauer proudly announced that Lieutenant Derek Seelig has successfully graduated from the FBI National Academy's 288th session. The ceremony took place at the esteemed National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, on December 7th, 2023, marking a significant achievement for both Officer Seelig and the Fredericksburg Police Department.
Lieutenant Seelig, the second officer in the department's history to complete this prestigious program, joined 197 other law enforcement professionals from various locations, making up the 288th session of the National Academy. The rigorous ten-week program is internationally renowned for its focus on advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training, with participants required to demonstrate exemplary professional records within their agencies.
Notably, the 198 graduates included representatives from 45 states, the District of Columbia, 24 countries, four military organizations, and six federal civilian organizations. The National Academy, held at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, has been a beacon of academic excellence since its inception in 1935, boasting a total of 54,763 graduates.
FBI Academy instructors, including special agents and other staff with advanced degrees, delivered the training. The courses, accredited by the University of Virginia since 1972, allow students to earn undergraduate and graduate credits. The National Academy is conducted at the same facility where the FBI trains its new special agents and intelligence analysts.
Regarding Lieutenant Derek Seelig, Chief Brian Vorauer commented, "The completion of the FBI National Academy is a testament to the dedication Lieutenant Derek Seelig has to his profession and to our community. The advanced training and concepts Lieutenant Seelig learned will benefit our residents and the department as we continue to improve life within our community through our commitment to community policing."
Lieutenant Derek Seelig's journey with the Fredericksburg Police Department began in 2009 as a Patrol Officer. Over the years, he steadily climbed the ranks, serving as a Patrol Sergeant, Training Coordinator, and eventually being promoted to Patrol Lieutenant in June 2022. In his current role, Lieutenant Seelig supervises five Patrol Sergeants and 23 Patrol Officers.
