A San Antonio teenager, Joe-Isaac Lee Yanez, 19, has been arrested in connection with a recent shooting and a separate standoff. Court records also indicate his ties to the death of 22-year-old Khadija Derry in Converse. Yanez was apprehended late Sunday after fleeing from officers attempting a traffic stop on the East Side of Bexar County.
He had been wanted on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and deadly conduct with a firearm related to a drive-by shooting, as well as two counts of theft of a firearm. Although not charged in Derry's death, affidavits for firearm theft charges detail the Converse shooting, where Derry was fatally shot while in her vehicle outside a home.
Surveillance footage revealed a four-door vehicle arriving at the scene, with the driver and passenger opening fire on Derry's car, firing approximately 18-20 shots before fleeing. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office deputy, who is Derry’s uncle, identified Yanez and another teen as possible suspects. A video on Instagram, provided by the uncle, allegedly showed Yanez at the crime scene.
An investigation traced the Instagram account to an IP address associated with an apartment complex on the Southwest Side, where Yanez resides. A former San Antonio ISD student, Yanez, was identified by a police officer as the person in the video.
Yanez faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and deadly conduct with a firearm in an unrelated shooting on Thursday. In this incident, Yanez and another suspect, Curtis Ray Wilson, allegedly opened fire on a 19-year-old man picking up his girlfriend from work. The victim was hit in the left arm, but a baby in the backseat was unharmed. A 44-year-old female employee was also injured.
San Antonio police identified Yanez as a suspect, and Wilson was also arrested on the same charges. The affidavit suggests the involvement of at least four other individuals in the case.
Lee's total bond amount has been set at $220,000.
