A plane crash in West Texas claimed the lives of a family of three, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The incident involved a Piper PA28, which crashed on Nov. 26 in a field near Mertzon, Texas, approximately 30 miles from San Angelo, as reported by the FAA. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unknown, but the last sighting of the plane was at 6:34 p.m. near the crash site.

The aircraft was registered to Marie and Jeremy Sanchez, with Jeremy Sanchez holding a license as a private pilot. The fatal crash took the lives of both parents and their fifth-grade daughter, Katarina Sanchez.

Flight records from FlightAware indicate that the plane took off from Las Cruzes International in New Mexico at 10 a.m. (Mountain Time), landing in Fort Stockton, Texas, at 1:58 p.m. Subsequently, the aircraft was recorded landing in Reagan County and taking off again. The flight record concludes 14 minutes after the last departure from Reagan County.

Katarina Sanchez was a fifth-grade student at Specht Elementary School in Comal County ISD.

Facebook post from Specht Elementary asked its community to wear purple, Katarina’s favorite color, on Dec. 1 2023 to honor their former student.

“The entire Comal ISD family are deeply saddened to learn about the death of one of our fifth-grade students, Katrina Sanchez, and her parents,” said the post from Specht Elementary. “Please join us as we extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to the Sanchez family as they mourn this loss and navigate their way through this difficult time,”
