In the early hours of Saturday, November 25, 2023, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) initiated an investigation into a two-vehicle crash on Western Road and 5 Mile Line Road, situated north of Palmview. At around 5:25 a.m., a preliminary examination unveiled that a silver BMW passenger car, carrying two individuals, was heading west on 5 Mile Line Road. As it approached the 4-way stop sign at the intersection of Western Road, the driver of the BMW, identified as Tania Flores, disregarded the stop sign.
Simultaneously, a Chevrolet Tahoe, marked as a Texas DPS patrol unit, was traveling southbound at the intersection of Western Road and 5 Mile Line, just south of a stop sign. The BMW collided with the DPS patrol unit, and instead of stopping, the BMW driver fled the scene along with the passenger.
The DPS Trooper, involved in the collision, has been released from the hospital and is reported to be in stable conditions. Both occupants of the BMW, driver Tania Flores and passenger Jonathan Lopez, were subsequently located. They were taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation before being taken into custody.
17-year-old Jonathan Lopez, a resident of Mission and the passenger of the BMW, was arrested and charged with fail to stop and render aid with serious bodily injury, classified as a State Jail Felony. 20-year-old Tania Flores, also a resident of Mission and the driver of the BMW, faces charges of intoxication assault with serious bodily injury to a peace officer, a Felony 1 charge.
Both Flores and Lopez have been transported to the Hidalgo County Jail to await further legal proceedings.
