Sheriff Javier Salazar said the investigation began after the victim's mother discovered explicit photos and messages on her daughter's phone and in her instagram account in mid-August. The teen was interviewed by investigators but could not initially provide enough information to identify the perpetrators.

Further investigation revealed the suspects first met the girl at a Walmart near Loop 1604 and Potranco Road in late July. After obtaining her Instagram information, the men arranged multiple meetings and engaged in sexual conduct with the minor, paying her a few hundred dollars in exchange.

Authorities were able to positively identify Urrutia and Melgar on Wednesday before arresting them at an apartment complex on Military and Marbach Road.
