San Antonio Man Convicted of Murder in Fatal Bus Stop Shooting, Receives Sentence of 68 Years

Joseph Harris, a resident of San Antonio, was found guilty of murder by a jury in the 187th District Court of Bexar County on September 19, 2023. The jury subsequently sentenced Harris to serve 68 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ).

The conviction stems from a tragic incident that occurred on February 28, 2022, when Joseph Harris and Isaiah Orozco were involved in an altercation at a downtown bus stop. During the confrontation, Orozco displayed a handgun from his pocket, but he did not point it at Harris or anyone else at the bus stop. Following this, Orozco put the handgun back in his pocket and attempted to leave the scene.

Contrary to this, Joseph Harris retrieved a handgun from his waistband and proceeded to open fire, firing a total of 16 shots and striking Orozco multiple times. Tragically, Orozco sustained fatal injuries as a result of the shooting.

During the trial, the defense argued that Harris had acted in self-defense, and during the sentencing phase, they claimed that the defendant acted in sudden passion. However, the jury did not concur with these arguments.

Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales expressed gratitude towards the jury members, saying, "We are grateful to the members of the Bexar County community who served on the jury. We cannot bring Isaiah Orozco back, but we hope his family can rest more easily knowing that justice has been done."
