D.A.R.E. Program Returns to Hondo, Focused on Youth Education and Community Outreach

The Drug Abuse Resistance Program (D.A.R.E.) is making a long-awaited return to Hondo after several years of absence, announced Hondo Chief of Police Justin Soza. The decision to reintroduce the program comes from a proactive approach to address potential dangers and crimes faced by the children in the community.

Chief Soza highlighted the importance of educating children about the risks associated with drugs and other illicit activities. He acknowledged that while parents and guardians play a crucial role in these conversations, children might not always heed their advice. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive approach to youth education, Chief Soza initiated the return of the D.A.R.E. program to Hondo.

The program aims not only to educate youth about the perils of substance abuse but also to foster positive interactions between law enforcement officers and the younger generation. Hondo Police Officers Ruiz and Hopkins, both serving as School Resource Officers, recently completed an intensive two-week training course at the D.A.R.E. Training Center, equipping them to lead the program effectively.

In addition to drug and alcohol awareness, the Hondo Police Department's D.A.R.E. program will encompass a wide range of subjects such as vaping, online and social media safety, bullying prevention, and teen mental health. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on life skills education, with the intent to empower and guide youths towards making informed and responsible decisions that contribute to a safe and healthy life.

By reinstating the D.A.R.E. program, the Hondo Police Department aims to strengthen its partnership with Hondo Independent School District and members of the community. The program seeks to create a positive impact by actively engaging with the youth and building relationships that transcend the classroom.
