SEGUIN, Texas - A Seguin man is in custody following a deadly shooting Thursday afternoon in the parking lot of a Walmart that left a woman dead and another person injured.
According to the Seguin Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 4:51 p.m. May 28 to reports of shots fired at the Walmart located at 550 S. Highway 123 Bypass in Seguin.
When officers arrived, they learned the suspect had fled the area before law enforcement reached the scene.
Investigators located a woman, identified as 35-year-old Katrina Wheeler of Seguin, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second victim, a 37-year-old man, was also found with gunshot injuries. He received treatment from EMS personnel before being airlifted to a hospital in the San Antonio area. Authorities have not released an update on his condition.
At approximately 5:19 p.m., the suspect vehicle was located outside Seguin by the New Berlin Marshal's Office.
A low-speed pursuit involving deputies from the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office, troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety, New Berlin deputies, and Seguin Police officers followed.
The pursuit ended in the 3000 block of FM 775, where authorities took the suspect into custody without further incident.
Police identified the suspect as 42-year-old John Wheeler of Seguin.
Investigators have not yet released a motive for the shooting, and the case remains under active investigation.
Additional agencies assisting with the investigation include the Texas Rangers, Texas Game Wardens, and the Wilson County Sheriff's Office.
Seguin police also thanked Walmart employees for their attentiveness and cooperation during the incident.
