an Antonio Firefighters were summoned for a second time within hours on Sunday, August 6, 2023, to battle a devastating multiple-alarm fire that tore through a Northwest Side apartment complex. The first blaze erupted around 12:45 p.m. at the intersection of Marbauch Avenue and Castroville Road, rapidly engulfing multiple buildings and triggering an upgrade to a second alarm as a precautionary measure.

The urgency escalated further as a second fire erupted later that evening at The Frederick Apartments (4800 block of Gus Eckert Road), prompting a swift response from firefighting units.

Fire Chief Mark Alvarez, who was on-site at the scene of the inferno, reported that upon arrival, the fire had already advanced significantly, forcing the crews to adopt a defensive stance. Alvarez highlighted the formidable challenges posed by prevailing wind conditions, varying elevation, and issues with the water supply, which hindered firefighting efforts.

"Some of the hydrants located in close proximity to the blaze proved ineffective, necessitating us to seek water sources farther away. Additionally, the varying elevation levels demanded the pumping of water to counteract the height difference," Chief Alvarez explained, emphasizing the complex nature of the firefighting operation.

All residents of the apartment complex were successfully evacuated, averting potential casualties. However, the devastating flames consumed the entire building, leaving it in ruins. As residents grapple with the loss of their homes and possessions, firefighting teams are actively working to secure temporary accommodations for those displaced by the disaster.

Despite the intensity of the fires, there have been no reports of injuries as of now.

The investigation into the cause of these successive fires remains ongoing.
