Massive Grass Fire Burns 91 Acres in DeWitt County; Four Homes Saved After 7-Hour Battle


DE WITT COUNTY, Texas — A fast-moving grass fire scorched approximately 91 acres Friday afternoon near Zengerle Road in the Thomaston area, prompting a massive multi-agency response and threatening several homes.

At approximately 1:50 p.m. on February 6, the 911 Dispatch Center with the De Witt County Sheriff's Office received reports of a large grass fire. What followed was a coordinated response involving local, county, state, and community partners.

Fire departments responding included:

  • Thomaston Volunteer Fire Department

  • Cuero Fire Department

  • Cuero Volunteer Fire Department

  • Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department

  • Nursery Volunteer Fire Department

  • Yoakum Volunteer Fire Department

  • Westhoff Volunteer Fire Department

  • Victoria Fire Department

  • Fordtran Volunteer Fire Department

EMS support was provided by Cuero Regional Hospital EMS.

Additional coordination and assistance came from:

  • De Witt County Sheriff's Office (dispatch and on-scene support)

  • Precinct Commissioners 1, 2, and 3 with water trucks

  • McMahan Services

  • Enbridge Inc.

  • A local landowner who provided dozer support

  • Cuero Auxiliary of Volunteer Fire Department, which supplied food and water

  • Community members who assisted with water for responders

State resources also responded, including the Texas A&M Forest Service and the Texas Division of Emergency Management.

After nearly seven hours of firefighting efforts, crews successfully contained the blaze. Four homes were directly threatened but were protected thanks to the rapid and coordinated response.

The De Witt County Office of Emergency Management expressed appreciation to the agencies, volunteers, commissioners, businesses, and residents who assisted, highlighting the teamwork and resilience shown throughout the operation.
