A multi-month investigation by the Heart of Texas Auto Theft Task Force, working alongside the Burnet County Sheriff's Office, has dismantled a sophisticated trailer theft ring operating across Central Texas.
Investigators say the suspects fraudulently purchased trailers using fake identification and counterfeit cashier’s checks, causing losses estimated at more than $150,000. The thefts and recoveries spanned multiple jurisdictions, including Burnet, Marble Falls, Kingsland, Georgetown, Buda, Mexia, and Blanco, with additional out-of-state connections identified in Washington and Idaho.
Authorities say one suspect was arrested while actively attempting another fraudulent trailer purchase.
License Plate Reader technology played a crucial role in the investigation, allowing detectives to track a suspect vehicle across county lines using unique vehicle characteristics. Officials say the case highlights how technology, combined with strong interagency cooperation, can break complex organized theft operations.
Charges in the case include theft, fraud, identity theft, forgery, and engaging in organized criminal activity. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges are possible.
Officials credited the success of the case to the MVCPA grant-funded task force and its law enforcement partners, calling the outcome a strong example of coordinated enforcement across Central Texas.
