KYLE, TX - A man has been charged in connection with a drive-by shooting in Kyle that left a homeowner seriously injured while sleeping inside his residence.
During the early morning hours of November 3, 2025, deputies with the Hays County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shots-fired call in the 500 block of Sante Fe Run. When deputies arrived, they discovered the homeowner had been struck by gunfire and suffered serious injuries. Investigators determined the residence had been hit multiple times, and several spent shell casings were recovered from the roadway in front of the home. Based on interviews with the victim and family members, investigators initially believed the shooting was a random act with no known motive.
Days later, on November 12, Abraham Herrera was arrested in an unrelated shooting incident in which an AR-style firearm was seized. Investigators then became aware of another drive-by shooting in Martindale that occurred the weekend after Thanksgiving. Herrera was identified as the suspect in that case and was taken into custody shortly after the incident.
Hays County investigators received digital evidence from the Texas Rangers that helped establish Herrera as the likely suspect in both the Kyle and Martindale shootings. On December 19, Herrera was arrested by the Hays County Sheriff’s Office on an outstanding warrant issued by the Texas Rangers.
With assistance from the Austin Police Department, investigators were later able to conclusively link the shell casings recovered from the Kyle shooting scene to the AR-style firearm previously seized from Herrera. On December 23, 2025, Herrera was formally charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a first-degree felony. He remains in custody at the Hays County Jail, and bond has not been set.
The investigation involved a coordinated effort between the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, Martindale Police Department, Texas Rangers, and the Austin Police Department.
