Steven Joseph Gaytan, 59, of New Braunfels, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for Continuous Violence Against the Family. Judge Bruce Boyer of the 22nd District Court imposed the sentence, designating Gaytan as a Habitual Offender due to prior felony convictions for Burglary of a Non-Habitation and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
The conviction stems from repeated incidents of aggression and intimidation at his mother’s residence, where Gaytan lived. On June 13, 2023, New Braunfels Police responded to a disturbance on S. Castell Avenue after a family member discovered and removed Gaytan’s methamphetamine pipe and other drug paraphernalia. When confronted about the missing items, Gaytan became enraged, verbally abusive, armed himself with two hammers, threatened to damage a family vehicle, and tried to seize a phone while yelling and cursing. Video evidence provided by the family documented the confrontation.
Two weeks later, officers were called to the residence after Gaytan struck a family member in the face with a cane. On August 15, 2023, police again responded when Gaytan assaulted another family member during a separate incident. These acts demonstrated a consistent pattern of violence and intimidation toward multiple relatives.
The New Braunfels Police Department investigated the incidents, and Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Feldman prosecuted the case on behalf of the State of Texas.
