Honduran National Charged After Assaulting Two Detention Officers at Texas Immigration Facility

SAN ANTONIO, TX – A Honduran national is facing federal charges after allegedly attacking two detention officers at the Karnes County Immigration Processing Center, federal officials announced Thursday.

According to court documents, Jorge Alberto Maradiaga-Carias became aggressive during an argument with a detention officer, refusing orders and making threatening gestures. When a supervisor arrived to assist, Maradiaga-Carias allegedly grabbed and struck him in the head before putting him in a headlock.

The affidavit states that during the struggle, Maradiaga-Carias kicked the first officer twice in the head—causing him to fall backward and hit his head on a brick wall—and tried to grab the supervisor’s pepper spray canister before being subdued by additional officers.

Both officers were treated for injuries. One sustained minor injuries and was placed on medical leave, while the other was diagnosed with a mild concussion.

Maradiaga-Carias has been charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding a federal officer. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in federal prison.

The case is being investigated by ICE, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Wannarka for the Western District of Texas.
