San Antonio Man Sentenced to Six Years After High-Speed Chase and Identity Theft Case

Barry Joseph Hawkins

NEW BRAUNFELS, TX - A San Antonio man has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to Evading Arrest or Detention with a Vehicle and Fraudulent Use or Possession of Identifying Information involving multiple victims.

27-year-old Barry Joseph Hawkins entered guilty pleas to both charges and chose to have his sentence decided by the court. Judge Gary Steel of the 274th District Court sentenced Hawkins to six years in prison.

The case stems from a July 21, 2023 incident in which New Braunfels Police responded to reports of multiple car alarms going off in the Magnolia Springs neighborhood. Officers spotted Hawkins driving a Dodge Challenger speeding away from the area.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, Hawkins fled, running several stop signs and reaching speeds over 120 miles per hour on southbound I-35, weaving dangerously through traffic and nearly causing several collisions. The 13-minute pursuit ended in Selma after Hawkins’ vehicle ran out of gas.

During a search of the vehicle, police found multiple stolen credit and debit cards, as well as several Texas driver’s licenses that did not belong to Hawkins.

The case was investigated by the New Braunfels Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Pawandeep Singh on behalf of the State of Texas.
