High-Speed Chase Ends with Arrest After Burglary Attempt in Atascosa County

Arrest of Roman Gomez

On Saturday evening, August 9th, Atascosa County Deputies responded to a possible burglary in the 5300 block of FM 541, a location with a history of break-ins. While searching the rural property on foot, deputies spotted Roman Gomez, 39, of San Antonio, attempting to flee by driving a pickup truck with a trailer through a fence.

Gomez led deputies on a high-speed chase west on FM 541, then north on IH-37 toward Pleasanton. Deputies and Texas DPS units used spike strips multiple times along the route, including at FM 541 and IH-37, Hwy 281 near Pleasanton, and Loop 410 in San Antonio, flattening several tires. Despite the damage, Gomez continued driving on the rims.

The chase ended near Loop 410 and Presa when Gomez crashed after hitting a DPS trooper’s vehicle. He then fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by an Atascosa County deputy.

Gomez was taken to Atascosa County Jail and faces charges including evading arrest in a motor vehicle (3rd degree felony), evading arrest on foot (Class A misdemeanor), burglary of a building (state jail felony), and criminal mischief (state jail felony). He also had an active Bexar County warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

Additional charges related to offenses in Bexar County and Atascosa County may be filed as the investigation continues.

Atascosa County Sheriff Jake Guerra thanked the Texas DPS, Pleasanton Police Department, and Bexar County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance. No injuries were reported during the incident.
