In a shocking incident at Shelby Park on July 16, 2023, troopers in Eagle Pass arrested Miguel Ernesto Nunez-Martinez, an illegal immigrant from Honduras, for criminal trespass and endangering a child, causing imminent danger.
The alarming incident unfolded at approximately 1:08 pm when authorities encountered Nunez-Martinez on the premises of Shelby Park, a private property. Despite the presence of shipping containers, constantine wire, fences, and prominent no trespassing signs, Nunez-Martinez ignored multiple verbal warnings not to enter the premises and was subsequently placed under arrest for criminal trespass.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Nunez-Martinez had also endangered his own daughter's life by throwing her into the Rio Grande River canal within Shelby Park. The horrifying act was witnessed by Florida Highway Patrol Lieutenant Michal E. Mattiza, who provided a detailed account of the incident in his sworn statement.
"I observed a Hispanic male, wearing all black, with tattoos on his neck, throw a child into the Rio Grande River," said Lieutenant Mattiza. He further described the child as approximately one year old, adorned with a pink bow in her hair. "The child went under the water completely and was obviously in distress and danger of drowning. The air boat turned around, and the same male walked over to the child and grabbed her from under the water. The child was crying and visibly terrified," added Lieutenant Mattiza.
In addition to the charge of criminal trespass, Nunez-Martinez is now facing charges of endangering a child under imminent danger of bodily injury. Authorities are taking this matter seriously and are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the child involved.
