The City of San Antonio, in partnership with planning and architectural firm Able City, announced a series of 10 two-day community planning workshops—one in each City Council district—to engage residents in shaping the proposed downtown Sports & Entertainment District.
The workshops are designed to provide residents flexible opportunities to drop in at any time over the two-day schedule, offering a transparent, community-driven process to gather meaningful input and share accurate, up-to-date information about the project’s scope, funding, and potential impact.
Each workshop includes round-table discussions, focus groups, and interactive activities. Day 1 features a community forum from 6 to 8 p.m., where planners, city officials, and representatives from Spurs Sports & Entertainment present project goals and answer questions. The evening continues with a hands-on mapping exercise to collect residents’ ideas for the district. Day 2 hosts an open house from noon to 7 p.m. with interactive stations displaying core guiding ideas, as well as additional opportunities for feedback.
Four topic-specific focus groups will be held across both days, covering housing, transportation, local business, and public community space.
Workshops will be held at the following locations and dates:
District 2, 4, 5, 7: June 24–25
District 3, 10: June 30–July 1
District 1, 6, 8, 9: July 8–9
Spanish translation services will be available onsite, and American Sign Language services can be requested through the project website, SA.gov/SportsDistrict. A bilingual digital survey will remain open through July for broader community input.
City Manager Erik Walsh emphasized the importance of community participation: “We need to understand what people want in this public space and their expectations around the potential downtown development. These community workshops will provide the opportunity for residents to talk directly with project representatives to get the facts, learn more details about the project, and provide their input on what they want to see for the project.”
