Justice was served this week in the 437th District Court, where a jury sentenced John Chatmon, a known violent gang member, to 99 years in prison for felony gun possession related to a fatal 2017 drive-by shooting.
Chatmon was the last of four individuals charged in the senseless crime that claimed the life of 4-year-old De'Earlvion Whitley. On the night of the shooting, multiple gunshots were fired into Whitley's home. The young boy was playing video games with his older brother when he was tragically struck in the head and killed.
During the trial, presided over by Judge Joel Perez, evidence of Chatmon's lengthy criminal history was presented, including seven prior felony convictions for assault of a public servant, arson, and criminal mischief. His status as a habitual offender significantly contributed to the jury's decision on sentencing.
Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Neal Cordero and Daniel Gutierrez led the prosecution, with support from Victim Advocate Rachel Garcia and Investigator Anthony Reed.
Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales commented on the verdict: "This sentence represents more than just the conclusion of a single case - it reflects the Bexar County District Attorney's Office's unwavering commitment to keeping violent offenders off the streets, so that every resident can feel safe in their community. While murder is always tragic, the loss of a young, innocent life due to senseless violence is a tragedy beyond words. Although this sentence cannot undo that pain, I am grateful that we were able to bring a measure of justice to De'Earlvion Whitley's family."
