Lopez, who was reportedly out on bond for a prior DWI charge, now faces serious charges in connection with the fatal crash. On June 30, 2023, law enforcement authorities held a press conference to disclose more information about the shocking event.
The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was discovered the morning after the collision by a pedestrian near the scene. Initially, there were no apparent external signs of injury, leading officials to underestimate the severity of the incident. However, a subsequent autopsy revealed severe internal injuries, including blunt force trauma that caused what officials described as an "internal decapitation."
During the press conference, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar addressed the media, shedding light on the devastating details. Sheriff Salazar explained that although the victim's skin remained intact, the internal structures of his neck had been severed, simulating a decapitation. He emphasized that the victim's death was likely instantaneous, given the extensive injuries, which included broken bones, a brain bleed, and a broken neck and back.
Sheriff Salazar further noted that it appeared the vehicle involved in the crash had been traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the homeless man. However, determining if the driver was intoxicated or distracted at the time of the incident remains a challenge. Alarmingly, Lopez had been out on bond for a previous charge of driving while intoxicated (DWI) when the fatal collision occurred.
