Former Navy Corpsman Arrested in Texas for Failing to Register as Sex Offender

A 34-year-old South Carolina man, Robert Counterman, has been apprehended by federal authorities for failing to register as a sex offender after traveling to Texas, as announced by U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.

Counterman was arrested in Laredo and is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Diana Song Quiroga at 9:30 a.m.

In 2018, Counterman, who served as a corpsman in the U.S Navy, was convicted of attempting lewd acts with a child under 16 and was mandated to register as a sex offender. Allegedly, he was discharged from military service following his conviction.

According to the indictment issued on Feb. 6, Counterman did not register or update his registration as a sex offender upon arriving in Texas in December 2022.

If found guilty, Counterman could face up to 10 years in federal prison along with a possible maximum fine of $250,000.

The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) spearheaded the investigation, with support from the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders and Fugitive Task Force.
