Fort Martin Scott Prepares for 175th Anniversary Living History Event

Fort Martin Scott is gearing up for a special two-day event commemorating its 175th Anniversary on Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9, 2024.

The celebration kicks off on Friday, March 8, at 4:00 pm with a ceremony on the fort’s parade ground honoring the arrival of the 8th Regiment of U.S. Infantry in 1849. Highlights include musical performances by Fredericksburg’s German choirs, the unveiling of a memorial stone for fallen soldiers, recognition of new interpretive markers, and the presentation of replica regimental colors. Visitors can explore an 1850s field hospital setup and enjoy a military retreat ceremony at sunset, followed by a free concert by the U.S. Army band.

On Saturday, March 9, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, living historians will depict frontier life at the fort throughout the 1800s. Activities include cannon firings, small arms demonstrations, and frontier skills demonstrations. Food trucks will offer refreshments, and attendees can learn about soldier and settler life.

Admission to the event is free, with donations appreciated. For more information, contact Andrea Schmidt, Director of Parks and Recreation, at (830)997-7521.

Fort Martin Scott is located at 1606 E. Main Street in Fredericksburg and is open Fridays through Sundays, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Closed Mondays through Thursdays.
