Former Teacher Pleads Guilty to Fatal Shooting: Ex-Boyfriend Takes Life of Girlfriend's Partner, Receives 40-Year Sentence

Mathew Wiessing

In a courtroom proceeding on January 10, 2024, 27-year-old Mathew Wiessing pleaded guilty to the murder of 23-year-old Michael Echaniz. The 290th District Court Judge sentenced Wiessing to 40 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The incident occurred on March 10, 2022, when elementary school teacher Michael Echaniz was fatally shot while leaving his apartment.

The motive for the murder was revealed to be a breakup between Echaniz's girlfriend and her ex-boyfriend, Mathew Wiessing. Wiessing, unable to accept the end of the relationship, had expressed a desire for reconciliation and voiced sinister aspirations regarding Echaniz's well-being. Suspicion fell on Wiessing when a witness, noticing his absence during the time of the murder, discovered a dark grey hoodie matching the suspect's description in his laundry.

The San Antonio Police Department's investigation revealed further evidence, including surveillance footage placing Wiessing's vehicle at the crime scene and incriminating searches on his phone. These searches included inquiries about suppressing gunshots, the fatality of certain gunshot wounds, and washing off gunshot residue.

Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales stated, "Mathew Wiessing's actions demonstrate a disregard for human life. We are unwavering in our commitment to securing justice for the victims of violent crimes and their families, relentlessly pursuing accountability in the face of such senseless tragedy." He expressed sympathy for Michael Echaniz's family and, as the case concludes, hopes that the justice served brings them solace.
