Bexar County Commissioner for Precinct 1, Rebecca Clay-Flores, recently shared her reflections on the conclusion of 2023 and the outlook for 2024. In her year-end message, she expressed joy for the successful passage of the 2023-2024 fiscal year budget, outlining key areas of focus and achievements. Here are some of the highlights Commissioner Clay-Flores highlighted:

Budget Highlights (2023-2024):

  • Approval of a $3 billion budget for Precinct 1.
  • Allocation of funds for a new Sheriff's substation in the northwest part of the Precinct.
  • Addition of patrol vehicles to accompany the approval of 50 new Sheriff deputy positions.
  • Reevaluation of law enforcement salaries, including deputy constables and environmental services.
  • Investment in various projects including parks, cultural centers, sidewalks for Southside ISD, creek and trail projects, road and flood control projects, Hot Wells Park restoration, and continued support for historical and cultural programming.

Economic Development and Job Creation:

  • Advocacy for a new state-of-the-art UHS hospital and the groundbreaking of the UHS Vida Clinic, providing primary and specialty care.
  • Negotiations leading to English-based company JCB building a new site on the Southside, creating 1500 new jobs and a projected $30 billion economic impact over the next decade.

Community Events:

  • Success of the 2nd Annual Harvest Trot 5k Walk/Run, where non-perishable items were collected for school district food pantries.
  • Participation in San Antonio Neighbors Together (National Night Out) to strengthen community bonds and enhance safety.

Madonna Neighborhood Center:

  • Allocation of funding for the rebuilding of the playground at the Madonna Neighborhood Center, promoting physical fitness and healthy activities for children.
  • Remodeling of the center's kitchen to continue serving nutritious meals to seniors.

Public Safety Initiatives:

  • Advocacy for a Bexar County Sheriff's Department substation in the Northwest area of Precinct 1 to address the rapid growth and ensure public safety.
  • Hosting four public safety forums featuring presentations from various agencies to provide safety tips and address community concerns.

Support for Education and Hunger Relief:

  • Contribution to the Harlandale Independent School District (HISD) Mobile Pantry to aid in providing fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, and other food items to families in need.
  • Presentation of a $25,000 check to VFW Post #4815 for roof repairs to maintain a welcoming space for veterans and their families.
