On the evening of Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at approximately 20:30hrs, Cameron County Sheriff Deputies responded to a report of suspicious activity on Tecate Dr. A concerned citizen had alerted authorities about a person potentially breaking into vehicles, providing an accurate description of the individual's clothing.
Upon arriving at the scene, Sheriff Deputies patrolled the area in an effort to locate the described subject. The subject, identified as 40-year-old Edelmiro Gonzalez, was found at the intersection of Tecate and Tonila Dr. When a Sheriff Deputy attempted to make contact, Gonzalez fled, initiating a foot pursuit.
Ignoring commands to stop, Gonzalez jumped over residential fences. Despite the evasion attempts, the Sheriff Deputy caught up with Gonzalez, who then resisted arrest by assuming a fighting stance. Using the minimum force necessary, the Sheriff Deputy successfully detained Gonzalez.
During the pursuit and subsequent struggle, the Sheriff Deputy sustained an injury to a lower extremity. Emergency Medical Services evaluated the Deputy on the scene, and later, the Deputy received treatment at a local hospital. It's anticipated that the Deputy will resume duties after a full recovery.
Edelmiro Gonzalez was arrested and transported to the Carrizales Rucker Detention Center, where he awaits arraignment. He faces charges of Evading Arrest (TPC 38.04), a Class A Misdemeanor, Resisting Arrest (TPC 38.03), another Class A Misdemeanor, and Public Intoxication (TPC 49.02), a Class C Misdemeanor.
During the arrest, Gonzalez apologized, admitting to running because he had consumed cocaine prior to the incident.
