San Antonio Animal Care Services Urges Caution Amid Holiday Pet Adoptions

As the holiday season approaches, many San Antonio residents are considering adding a furry friend to their families. San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) supports the idea of holiday pet adoptions but issues a strong warning against falling victim to scammers and unscrupulous breeders.

SAACS reports an influx of fraudulent pet sales during the festive season, where individuals misrepresent breeds or sell sick and underage animals for cash in parking lots or roadside locations. Such practices not only deceive potential pet parents but also violate the law, leading to the unfortunate deaths of animals due to diseases like parvo and distemper.

To combat this issue, SAACS encourages residents to report illegal pet sales by calling 3-1-1 or 210-207-6000. For those opting to purchase from breeders, SAACS advises asking pertinent questions, verifying vaccination records, and obtaining information about the animal's parents. A reputable breeder should willingly provide this information along with a signed health guarantee and a clear contract.

Regardless of the source, acquiring a pet is a lifelong commitment. SAACS emphasizes the importance of thoughtful decision-making, particularly during the busy holiday season. Considerations include the need for constant attention and supervision for puppies and kittens, making them most impressionable during this stage of their lives.

For those contemplating pets as gifts, SAACS suggests delaying the actual adoption until after the holidays. Instead, consider giving pet supplies or a stuffed animal as a precursor to the real thing. Additionally, involving the gift recipient in the decision-making process, planning a surprise trip to the shelter, and understanding that everyone's idea of the perfect pet may differ are essential aspects to consider.

Parents gifting a new puppy or kitten to their children must recognize that they will likely become the primary caregivers. Patience is key when bringing a new pet home, as the animal acclimates to its surroundings. SAACS recommends that potential adopters consult with the shelter's placement team to determine the perfect fit for their family and lifestyle.

SAACS assures that animals adopted from their facility undergo sterilization, vaccination, and microchipping before finding their "furever" homes. The Animal Care Services Adoption Center will be open until 2 p.m. on December 24, closed on Christmas Day, and reopen on December 26 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
