Methodist Hospital Texsan Achieves Medical Milestone with World's First Dual-Chamber Leadless Pacemaker Implant

Methodist Hospital Texsan proudly announces the successful implantation of the world's first dual-chamber leadless pacemaker system from Abbott. This groundbreaking medical feat, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in June 2023, introduces a minimally invasive solution for treating individuals with abnormal or slow heart rhythms.

Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiologists, Dr. Javier Roman Gonzalez and Dr. Jacqueline Schwartz, performed the historic implantation on November 17, 2023. The patient, experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and syncope due to variations in heart blockages, received the innovative dual-chamber leadless pacemaker.

Dr. Jacqueline Schwartz expressed gratitude, stating, "We are very fortunate to be a center that is at the forefront of this advancement in pacing technology."

The leadless pacemakers, small battery-powered devices, are implanted directly into the heart using a minimally invasive catheter-based approach, eliminating the need for incisions or cables. The dual-chamber leadless pacemaker specifically addresses the needs of nearly 80 percent of patients requiring pacing in both the right atrium and right ventricle.

One notable feature of this revolutionary device is its retrievability. Once the battery is depleted, it can be easily replaced during the same minimally invasive procedure. Additionally, patients benefit from reduced recovery times and fewer exercise restrictions compared to traditional pacemakers.

Esther Kwon, Chief Executive Officer at Methodist Hospital Texsan, remarked, "This groundbreaking device will revolutionize care for our current patients and creates a significant opportunity to expand the number of people we can serve."
