The Kerrville Police Department has received multiple reports of unauthorized use of Valero gas station credit cards, prompting an investigation into potential credit card skimming activities.
The incidents took place at a local gas station towards the end of October. Preliminary findings suggest that one or more gas pumps were equipped with a "skimmer," a device used to illicitly capture credit card information. Notably, the affected credit cards lacked a security chip, making them susceptible to fraudulent transactions.
Credit card skimmers are discreet devices installed inside gas pumps or credit card readers, aiming to harvest payment card details from unsuspecting customers during fuel purchases. Signs of tampering include loose or damaged pump cabinets, insecure card slots, and evidence of broken security tape on cabinets.
