Omar Martinez-Vargas, 37, has been sentenced to 30 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for the first-degree felony murder of Miguel Miranda-Hernández, 50. Martinez-Vargas had previously entered a guilty plea on October 13, 2023, and the sentencing was postponed to allow for a presentencing investigation (PSI), a tool used by the judge to assess appropriate punishment. The proceedings unfolded in the 437th District Court.
The incident occurred on February 11, 2022, while both Martinez-Vargas and Mr. Miguel Miranda-Hernández were working together on a local remodeling job at an apartment complex. Both men resided and worked at the construction site. A fatal altercation transpired, leading to defendant Martinez-Vargas fatally shooting Mr. Miranda-Hernández. The victim's body was discovered by a supervisor who had gone to check on them. Subsequently, Martinez-Vargas was apprehended at a nearby gas station, still in possession of the weapon used in the murder.
The case was handled by the Felony Criminal Trial Division of the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney's Office, with Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Neal Cordero and Andera Vizcarra leading the prosecution team. Investigator Bruce Hallonquist and Crime Victims' Advocate Rachel Garcia were also integral to preparing the case.
Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales remarked, "Omar Martinez-Vargas killed Miguel Miranda-Hernández without justification. It was a senseless killing. Our community rejects violence, and we are committed to holding criminals accountable and relentlessly pursuing justice."
