Escapee from Bexar County Jail Faces Felony Charge After Recapture

Nero Alexander

On Saturday, September 23, 2023, Nero Alexander, aged 39, faced an additional charge for felony escape after his unauthorized departure from the Bexar County Jail.

Bexar County Sheriff's Office Gang Unit deputies apprehended Alexander without incident at a residence in the 10000 block of Wildrose Bay in far West Bexar County at 10:12 p.m.

Originally detained on a misdemeanor theft charge, Alexander was awaiting housing assignment in the jail's booking area. At 7:04 p.m., a head count was conducted in the booking area, which revealed that Alexander was missing, prompting an immediate facility lockdown.

At 8:44 p.m., the booking staff determined that Alexander was no longer in the facility and suspected an erroneous release. After reviewing surveillance footage, investigators believed that Alexander intentionally joined a group of individuals who were being released from the facility.

Following Alexander's re-arrest, he was transported back to the Bexar County Jail and received an additional charge of escape, classified as a felony.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office Public Integrity Unit and Internal Affairs are presently conducting separate but simultaneous investigations into the incident. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has also been informed.

Alexander's original jail term was related to a charge of theft amounting to $100 to less than $750, classified as a Class B misdemeanor. The newly added charge is for escape from felony custody/correction facility, categorized as a 3rd-degree felony.
