CONVERSE, Texas - A 21-year-old man accused of escaping police custody after giving officers a false identity was arrested nearly two weeks later when a SWAT team found him hiding inside a Converse-area home, according to police.
Devontae Amillion Sweeney was taken into custody Tuesday, Sept. 1, in the 6700 block of Haven Meadow following a search involving Converse police and the Alamo Area Metro SWAT Team.
The case began Aug. 20 when Converse officers responded to the area of FM 78 and Crestway Road following a report of a possible assault involving an elderly person.
Officers located a man matching the description of the suspect at a nearby business and detained him.
Police said the man escaped custody and fled.
The Converse Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division took over the investigation. Detectives determined the man had provided officers with a false identity and impersonated another person while he was detained.
Investigators eventually identified him as Sweeney.
Detectives also discovered Sweeney was already wanted on three active felony warrants, according to police. Investigators obtained three additional warrants while continuing to search for him.
On Sept. 1, officers located Sweeney at a residence in the 6700 block of Haven Meadow.
Police said officers made repeated attempts to get Sweeney to surrender voluntarily before the tactical team entered the residence.
Sweeney was found hiding inside and was taken into custody without further incident.
He was booked through the Bexar County Central Magistrate's Office on warrants for escape from custody, failure to identify as a fugitive with intent to give false information, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance and two controlled substance possession offenses.
