Massive Salvage Yard Fire Burns About 100 Vehicles East of Uvalde


UVALDE, Texas - Firefighters from multiple agencies battled a large salvage yard fire Sunday afternoon that engulfed approximately 100 vehicles and produced heavy black smoke visible for miles east of Uvalde.

The Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Aug. 9 to a fire at a salvage yard in the 3000 block of U.S. Highway 90 East.

Upon arrival, firefighters found approximately 100 vehicles burning, along with other materials commonly found at a salvage yard. A large quantity of tires also caught fire, sending thick black smoke high into the air.

Multiple Fire Departments Respond

The Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department initially responded with a pumper truck, two tankers, a brush truck, and Tower 1.

As the fire continued to grow, mutual aid was requested from several neighboring agencies, including:

  • Knippa Volunteer Fire Department

  • Sabinal Volunteer Fire Department

  • Concan Volunteer Fire Department

  • La Pryor Volunteer Fire Department

  • City of Uvalde

  • Uvalde EMS

  • Uvalde County Sheriff's Department

  • Texas Department of Public Safety

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze at approximately 6:10 p.m.

Crews remained at the scene for several more hours extinguishing hot spots and ensuring the fire was completely under control before clearing the incident at approximately 8:22 p.m.

Controlled Burn Believed to Have Sparked Fire

According to the Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department, the fire was reportedly caused by a controlled burn that spread out of control.

No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged.

The Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department thanked the neighboring fire departments and assisting agencies for their support during the large-scale response.
