Guadalupe County Man Charged With Murder After Fatal Shooting in San Marcos Area

GUADALUPE COUNTY, Texas. A 21-year-old man has been arrested on murder and deadly conduct charges after authorities say he fatally shot a man early Sunday morning near San Marcos.

According to the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded at approximately 1:58 a.m. on Aug. 9 to reports of shots fired in the 5000 block of Crossover Road.

While deputies were en route, multiple 911 callers reported hearing gunfire and said a man was lying in a driveway.

San Marcos police officers arrived first and found Sergio Raynaldo Mata, 32, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Mata was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:16 a.m.

Suspect Detained at Scene

Investigators identified Miguel Angel Marquez Jr, 21, as the alleged shooter. He was detained at the scene by responding officers.

Authorities said several gunshots also struck a vehicle and a residence across the street. An adult male who was inside the home at the time was not injured.

Following the investigation, Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office investigators arrested Marquez and booked him into the Guadalupe County Adult Detention Center.

He has been charged with:

  • Murder

  • Deadly Conduct

The investigation remains ongoing.
