BEEVILLE, Texas - A grant-funded traffic enforcement operation led to the arrest of two people and the seizure of suspected narcotics during a traffic stop in Beeville, according to the Beeville Police Department.
Police said the arrests occurred Aug. 5 when an officer participating in the department's Operation Slow Down initiative conducted a traffic stop for a traffic violation.
What began as a routine enforcement stop quickly developed into a roadside criminal investigation, resulting in the recovery of suspected illegal drugs and the arrest of two individuals.
Yolanda Garcia was arrested and charged with delivery of marijuana in an amount of more than five pounds but less than 50 pounds, and manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance, Penalty Group 2, in an amount of four grams or more but less than 400 grams.
Juan Morin was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, Penalty Group 2, in an amount of one gram or more but less than four grams.
The Beeville Police Department said Operation Slow Down is funded through grant money that allows officers to spend dedicated time conducting proactive traffic enforcement while investigating criminal activity uncovered during lawful traffic stops.
Officials said the case highlights how routine traffic enforcement can lead to the discovery of more serious criminal offenses.
The investigation remains ongoing.
