POTEET, Texas - A South Texas woman is facing child endangerment and drug charges after authorities say she left two toddlers home alone while traveling to San Antonio.

According to the Poteet Police Department, officers received an anonymous call on the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 4, reporting that two young children had been left unattended at a residence while their mother, identified as Angelina Herrera, visited a boyfriend in San Antonio.

Officers immediately responded to the home but received no answer at the door.

Dispatchers later received additional calls about the incident, including information that the children's mother was on her way back to the residence.

At about the same time, Atascosa County Sheriff's deputies conducted an unrelated traffic stop involving a vehicle driven by Herrera after reportedly observing the vehicle speeding.

During the stop, deputies arrested Herrera on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, Penalty Group 2.

Meanwhile, another family member arrived at the residence and allowed Poteet police officers inside the home.

Officers located the two toddlers asleep inside the residence. Authorities said both children were unharmed.

In addition to the narcotics charge filed by the Atascosa County Sheriff's Office, Herrera was charged with two counts of abandoning or endangering a child.

The investigation remains ongoing.
