SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A San Antonio man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to the 2020 murder of a homeowner who confronted a group of suspected vehicle burglars outside his residence.
Judge Michael Mery sentenced Jesus Monsivais Jr. this week pursuant to a plea agreement for the murder of Oscar Castillo Jr., the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney's Office announced.
According to prosecutors, the shooting occurred in December 2020 when Monsivais and several others drove through a gated San Antonio neighborhood with the intent of burglarizing vehicles.
As the group slowly drove through a cul-de-sac, Castillo confronted them outside his home and questioned why they were in the neighborhood and what they were doing there.
Prosecutors said Monsivais exited the vehicle and shot Castillo in the front yard of his home, killing him.
Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Rosa Garcia and Virgil Yanta of the Criminal Trial Division prosecuted the case with assistance from Victim Advocate Jessica Muñoz and Investigator Martin Gaskin.
"Today's sentence serves as a reminder that violence will not be tolerated in our community, and we will do everything we can to ensure safety among our residents and visitors," Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales said in a statement.
Because Monsivais has pleaded guilty and been sentenced, the case has been adjudicated.
