SAN MARCOS, Texas - Authorities are searching for a Hays County Jail inmate who allegedly escaped custody by posing as another inmate who was scheduled to be released.
According to the Hays County Sheriff's Office, 21-year-old Xavier Isiah Gutierrez escaped from the jail on July 19 after allegedly impersonating another inmate with the same first name during the release process.
Gutierrez is described as 6 feet tall, weighing approximately 240 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
At the time of his escape, Gutierrez was being held on a motion to adjudicate guilt related to a felony theft case investigated by the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office, as well as an evading arrest warrant issued by the Pearland Police Department.
Following the escape, the Hays County Sheriff's Office obtained a warrant charging Gutierrez with Escape, a third-degree felony.
The sheriff's office has launched an investigation into how Gutierrez was able to leave the jail while allegedly posing as another inmate. Officials said the review will examine the circumstances surrounding the release and identify any procedural changes or additional safeguards needed to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
