UVALDE, Texas. A coordinated operation involving local, state and federal law enforcement agencies ended with the arrest of a wanted violent fugitive and the recovery of an illegally modified handgun Wednesday evening after a pursuit through a Uvalde neighborhood.
According to the Uvalde County Sheriff's Office, deputies and Uvalde police officers assigned to the U.S. Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force located 21-year-old Joey Daniel Rios at approximately 6:48 p.m. on July 8.
Authorities attempted to stop the vehicle Rios was driving, but he failed to yield and drove into a nearby residential neighborhood before stopping. Investigators said Rios then fled on foot.
Officers pursued Rios but temporarily lost sight of him after he ran into the backyard of an abandoned residence. Believing he was hiding nearby and possibly armed, law enforcement established a one-block safety perimeter and asked residents to shelter in place while officers searched the area.
Additional personnel from the Uvalde County Sheriff's Office, Uvalde County Constables Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Border Patrol and other members of the U.S. Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force responded to assist with the search and containment efforts.
Rios was eventually found hiding inside a storage shed. During the encounter, he told officers he was armed but complied with commands and surrendered without incident. No officers, members of the public or the suspect were injured.
Investigators said Rios was wanted on outstanding warrants that included aggravated robbery and pretrial bond violations.
During the arrest, officers recovered a Glock pistol equipped with an illegal conversion device, commonly known as a "switch," which allows a semiautomatic handgun to function as a fully automatic firearm.
Authorities said additional investigative work following the arrest led to the recovery of suspected narcotics within Uvalde County. The investigation remains ongoing as local, state and federal investigators continue reviewing the evidence.
Rios was booked into the Uvalde County Jail on the outstanding warrants. Investigators are also seeking additional state and federal charges, including possession of a controlled substance, evading arrest and federal firearms violations, pending prosecutorial review.
Once officers confirmed there were no remaining threats, the safety perimeter was lifted and residents were advised the area was secure.
